The Lava Tarantula is a small but incredibly eye-catching New World species, prized for its fiery coloration. It typically displays a dark base contrasted by vibrant red, orange, and sometimes ember-like tones across the abdomen and legs, giving it a glowing, “molten” appearance that inspired its common name. Despite its size, it stands out as a true display piece.

Dwelling Type: Terrestrial (Heavy Webber / Opportunistic Burrower)
This species is primarily ground-dwelling but will often create shallow burrows and heavily web its enclosure. Davus sp. “Panama” tends to lay down dense webbing across the substrate and around its hide, sometimes forming webbed tunnels.

Temperament:
Skittish and quick. While not typically defensive, it is very fast and prone to bolting when disturbed. It may kick urticating hairs if it feels threatened but generally prefers to flee rather than stand its ground.

Growth Rate: Moderate
Growth is steady, though this species remains relatively small even at full maturity.

Feeding Response:
Strong. It is an eager feeder and will readily take appropriately sized prey, often reacting quickly and decisively.

Care Notes:
Provide a terrestrial setup with some substrate depth and plenty of anchor points for webbing. Slightly moist conditions are generally preferred, along with good ventilation. Expect heavy webbing and an active enclosure layout as the spider settles in.

Overall:
With its fiery coloration, heavy webbing behavior, and active nature, the Lava Tarantula is a fantastic choice for keepers who enjoy smaller, visually striking species that bring a lot of character to their enclosure.
