Melopoeus sp. Bach Ma Tarantula

The Bạch Mã Tarantula (commonly referred to as Cyriopagopus sp. “Bach Ma”) is a striking Old World species native to the dense, humid forests of central Vietnam. Named after the Bạch Mã National Park where it originates, this tarantula is highly sought after for its bold appearance and impressive presence.

This species typically displays a deep, velvety brown to near-black base coloration, often accented with subtle earthy tones or faint patterning that helps it blend seamlessly into its natural environment. As it matures, the Bạch Mã tarantula develops a robust, muscular build with thick legs and a commanding stance that makes it a standout in any collection.

Like many Old World tarantulas, Cyriopagopus sp. “Bach Ma” is known for its speed, defensive nature, and potent venom. It lacks urticating hairs, meaning it relies heavily on threat postures and rapid movement when disturbed. Because of this, it is best suited for experienced keepers who are comfortable working with more reactive species.

In captivity, this species thrives in a warm, humid setup with deep substrate to accommodate its fossorial (burrowing) tendencies. It will often construct elaborate tunnel systems and may remain hidden for extended periods, especially during premolt or after settling into a new enclosure.
