Psalmopoeus irminia

Venezuelan Suntiger Tarantula

The Venezuelan Suntiger is one of the most visually striking arboreal tarantulas in the hobby, prized for its dramatic orange patterning contrasted against a deep black base coloration. Native to the forests of Venezuela, this fast-growing species is known for its speed, heavy webbing, and bold feeding response, making it a favorite among intermediate and advanced keepers alike.

As slings mature, they develop the iconic “tiger stripe” pattern across the abdomen along with vibrant orange leg markings that give this species its well-earned common name. Psalmopoeus irminia is an incredibly active webber and will often create elaborate retreats throughout cork bark, anchor points, and enclosure corners, adding both beauty and natural behavior to its setup.

Unlike many New World species, the Venezuelan Suntiger lacks urticating hairs and instead relies on speed and defensive behavior when threatened. While generally reclusive, they are highly reactive during feeding and are fascinating to observe once established in a properly designed arboreal enclosure.

  • Temperament: Fast / Skittish / Defensive
  • Humidity: Moderate
  • Substrate: Slightly moist lower layers with good ventilation
  • Lifestyle: Arboreal
