Pterinochilus murinus (Orange Baboon Tarantula 'Mikumi' DCF)-Female
Pterinochilus murinus “Mikumi” (Orange Baboon Tarantula – DCF) – Female
The Mikumi locality of the Orange Baboon Tarantula, especially in its DCF (Dark Color Form), is a stunning Old World variant known for its deeper, richer coloration compared to the more common bright orange forms. Females often display a mix of dark burnt orange, rusty red, and shadowed patterning that gives them a more intense, dramatic appearance while still retaining that classic OBT look.
Dwelling Type: Terrestrial (Heavy Webber / Semi-Fossorial)
Like other Pterinochilus murinus forms, this species is technically terrestrial but behaves as a heavy webber. It will create dense, layered webbing across the enclosure and may dig shallow burrows beneath its web structure, forming a secure, fortified retreat.
Temperament:
Highly defensive and extremely fast. This species is well known for its bold attitude and quick threat displays. As an Old World tarantula, it lacks urticating hairs and relies on speed and a potent bite for defense. Females, being larger and longer-lived, often show more confident defensive behavior. Not suitable for handling.
Growth Rate: Fast
This species grows quickly and establishes itself rapidly, often beginning to web heavily shortly after being introduced to an enclosure.
Feeding Response:
Very strong. It is an aggressive and enthusiastic feeder, striking prey with speed and intensity.
Care Notes:
A well-ventilated enclosure with moderate substrate and plenty of anchor points is ideal. Keep conditions mostly dry. Expect heavy webbing that can completely reshape the enclosure. Extra caution is needed during maintenance due to its speed and defensive nature.
Overall:
With its darker, more intense coloration, heavy webbing, and bold personality, the Mikumi DCF Orange Baboon Tarantula is a powerful display species best suited for experienced keepers who appreciate high-energy Old World tarantulas.
