Grammostola pulchra

Brazilian Black Tarantula

The Brazilian Black Tarantula is one of the most sought-after New World species in the hobby, prized for its deep velvety black coloration, calm temperament, and impressive adult size. Native to Brazil and Uruguay, Grammostola pulchra is widely regarded as one of the best display and beginner-friendly tarantulas available due to its hardy nature and generally relaxed behavior.

As this species matures, it develops a rich jet-black appearance across the entire body, especially noticeable after fresh molts when the velvety sheen becomes most vibrant. Combined with their slow, deliberate movements and long lifespan, the Brazilian Black has earned a reputation as a true centerpiece species for both new and experienced keepers alike.

While juveniles can occasionally be shy or burrow briefly, adults often remain visible for long periods, making them excellent display tarantulas. Their calm demeanor and manageable care requirements have made them one of the most iconic species in the hobby.

Taxonomy Note

Within the tarantula hobby, there has been increasing discussion and speculation surrounding the true identity of many specimens sold for decades as Grammostola pulchra. Recent observations and ongoing taxonomic discussions suggest that a portion of these animals may actually align more closely with Grammostola quirogai, a species that shares an estimated 96% genetic similarity with G. pulchra.

At this time, the distinction between the two species within the hobby remains difficult to fully confirm, especially considering that true lineage data for many captive bloodlines has been unavailable for decades. Because these iconic jet-black tarantulas have been widely recognized, bred, and distributed under the name Grammostola pulchra for well over 30 years, we will continue using the established hobby name for clarity and consistency.

This helps ensure customers can easily recognize the classic “Brazilian Black” tarantula that has become a staple species within the hobby, while also acknowledging the ongoing scientific discussion surrounding its taxonomy.
