Phormingochilus hatihati

Purple Earth Tiger Tarantula

The Purple Earth Tiger Tarantula is a stunning and highly sought-after arboreal Old World species admired for its deep purple hues, sleek appearance, and fast-moving behavior. Formerly classified within Cyriopagopus, Phormingochilus hatihati has become increasingly popular among advanced keepers for its unique coloration and impressive webbing habits.

Native to Southeast Asia, this species thrives in vertically oriented enclosures where it can construct dense web retreats among cork bark and elevated anchor points. As juveniles and adults mature, subtle purple and violet tones begin to emerge across the legs and carapace, especially noticeable after fresh molts and under natural lighting.

Like many arboreal Old World species, the Purple Earth Tiger is extremely quick, defensive when threatened, and highly food responsive. While often reclusive during the day, established individuals may sit near the entrance of their retreats waiting for prey, giving keepers occasional glimpses of their incredible coloration.

Species Highlights

  • Beautiful purple and violet coloration
  • Fast-moving arboreal Old World species
  • Heavy webbing and retreat construction
